Wednesday 11th December 2013 - A Triumphant Day!

I am pleased to say that bricklaying started on the Signal Box today. It is the culmination of many months of  planning and preparation, and 19 Volunteers were on site to enjoy a great sense of occasion. The day started with clearing the remnants of the tree felling, followed by the setting out  of the footprint of the building. By the end of the  days session there was a row of blues  along the back and southern side of the box, with the door frame located for access.

Tony tells John where the next brick goes.......
John Crawford had a smile on his face for most of the day - and quite right too, as he was responsible for the design. It will look a fine, GWR Signal Box.

All of the bricklayers were "drawn" to future challenge of  building the Signal Box- its  difficult to express the obvious excitement they feel.

Calculations - part of the bricklayers art...BW

We will press on with the Signal Box at a steady rate - aiming for perfection rather speed.

The A Team....

On other fronts work continue on the Platform 2B wall  -  2 courses were laid by Roger B and Clive (the A+ Team...)and there are only 2 more course to go before the wall reaches corbelling height.

Terry....
Rod and Keith...
In the car park a gang  of 4 continued to clear out the ditch. What great progress has been made!

Vic Smith
On the Station Driveway, Vic continued his one man assault on the flower border opposite the Station Site. The picture nicely shows the progress that Vic has made.

Peter Q up the steps ..... Doreen making a sale

Talking of the driveway, Marguerite's Shed has now got some extra winter protection, so please come along and test it out!

Mike you hum it , I'll sing it ... Jim
The security cameras had an upgrade today.  Sorry they were down when the first brick was laid!

It was a real milestone day today, and I took  a great deal of satisfaction from the first brick being laid and just as much from the smiles and high spirits of the BAG Volunteers who have been waiting patiently for  this day to come along. A couple of my chums asked why I wasn't laying the first brick  - all I can say is that I will be at the head of the queue to lay the last one!

A Jo Roesen Special

Thanks to everyone who attended today - it was a great day!

So, the cornerstone goes in, are you doing the signal box in old English bond ? Is there any decorative brickwork going into the design? Did u fell the 2 trees behind the box? ..

inspirational. Was a little annoyed when GWSR turned down a
chance to save Bourton on the Water Station but this is very much worth a doantion which will follow

Do you know if the points and signals will be worked with the old way with rods and steel wires or will there be electic wires and moters.

Will the station have overhead catenaries to allow preserved electric locomotives?

It is a steam railway!!

The signals and points will definitely be operated the 'old' way via rods and wires. The lever frame has already been refurbished by the S&T Dept. and is lying in a state of readiness for transfer to Broadway. Signal posts and fittings are continuously being stripped, refurbished and stored waiting to be 'planted' in situ as the Broadway trackwork progresses. All being done in between the normal routine maintenance of current signalling equipment.
