Bullhead Chair

Our volunteer and photographer in chief Jo Roesen has been trying to find out more about a chair that was unearthed on site. He has passed this information and pictures to me and asked if we can seek help via the blog.

A bit of info on the chair:

I found it when we were digging out the space for the platform 2 foundations. It was buried in the original infill, approximately at the height of the original platform, and just to the rear of it, a few yards to the left of the waiting room.

It has 3 bolt holes (one is blocked by a broken off bolt) and no visible lettering – in fact there is not really any space for lettering because of its scalloped shape. The underneath has a hollow ‘H’ shaped space. We have a 1911 GWR chair from Taunton which looks more modern, squarish and with a larger footprint, while this one is quite rounded, narrower and I suspect of an older vintage. And what is it doing at Broadway?

I’d be very interested to see what our readers can make of it.

You could also try our own P'Way Dept., whom, I understand, have some historians amongst their members....

Is it a relic of the original contractors temporary track? It looks a bit lightweight for anything permanent.

Could be from a narrow gauge contractors line - looks similar to some of the Festiniog Rly chairs.
