An Aside

A wonderful Picture courtesy of Peter Zabek in this months Steam Railway Magazine of a group of ex enginemen  at South Holt Station on the North Norfolk Railway.

Apart from being a fine picture I couldn't help wondering if this might be the Broadway Gang in a year or two, with the Broadway pines in the background and Earl of Mount Edgcumbe sizzling nicely, waiting to take us south! I think it just might........

Er, 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' Bill.
Kind Regards, Howard

Take no notice. He can't spell "Amey" either. Or, at least that's the firm I think to which he was referring. But as I work in Transport, it is a name better known to myself than 'our Bill'

You may like to know that Holt Station on the NNR opened in 1989 after the completion of the Holt extension. I was a track laying volunteer on the NNR's Holt extension between 1981 and 1989. Believe it or not, there never was a station at this site, part of the site was just simply a single track cutting edged with a long line of mature pine trees. To create the station site we invited local builders to dump building rubble in the cutting. When this was full, we levelled it off and built a 6 coach up platform, a few years ago the down platform was added complete with the former Stalham station building which was removed brick by brick and reassembled at Holt and was soon joined by the former Thursford Goods shed which was also removed brick by brick and reassembled at Holt. Incidentally, the original Holt station was bulldozed in 1981 to make way for the Holt bypass. The NNR Holt station shows what can be achieved out of nothing, just as you are achieving at Broadway. To help you, I'm making a small donation to the Platform 1a appeal. Keep up the good work!

Norfolkman,
What an interesting tale of your endeavours at Holt. It reads very much like our own story and shows that enthusiasm and determination will win the day.
Thank you for your donation.

Thankfully, we did not have to move in tons of infill but, merely(?), build from the ground up! It does, indeed, show how much can be achieved by volunteers!!

All the very best,

Jim
